Under 18s Elimination Semi Final
WT Birkalla 6 – Croydon 5
Saturday’s elimination final for the U18s started with the team suffering the effects of flu and injury with a depleted squad not at 100% – we weathered early pressure from Croydon and looked a little off colour in the first half, conceding a goal just before half time. At half time we talked of mental strength and the need to increase our intensity to stay in the final.
The second half was marked by a much better performance and we started to really push Croydon creating a few good chances, the introduction of Luke Tollan and Tommy Connolly really lifted the team with fresh legs and it was Luke Tollan that equalized on 70 minutes with a text book downward header in a crowded box. The match went to extra time and we had to endure an extreme – barely legal physical challenge from Croydon, again the boys will to win and mental strength saw them settle and gain the upper hand in the second period of extra time with a number of chances but not the goal to win the game.
The game was then settled by a steady, nerveless penalty shoot out with goals from Hamish Anderson, John Kananga, Connor Moss, Jack Hudson James Polli and Patrick Pietrosanti our goal keeper.
Patrick’s heroics didn’t stop at scoring he then went on to win the tie with two fabulous penalty saves to deliver a 6:5 penalty shoot out victory. A gutsy and determined performance to open our finals campaign.
Thanks to Aldo for joining the coaching team today and thanks to Jason for his efforts to get the team to this stage of the season. Enjoy a little celebration tonight and congratulations on a job well done. Charlie
